ABOUT

Landon Michaels, Psy.D

If you've found yourself here, you are looking for change.
My therapy approach will help you build new behaviors that align with the person you want to be and get control of behaviors that no longer fit your life. Because the path towards recovery and growth is difficult, I try to make the journey as enjoyable as possible. While providing empirically supported treatments, I mix in irreverence, bad puns, and a youthful energy.

I have many years of training and a wealth of experience in treating a wide arrange of issues including depression, anxiety, interpersonal difficulties, eating disorders, substance use, OCD, and PTSD. My style works well across the lifespan for both adults and teens. I work to custom tailor treatment to your needs and have flexibility to work with unique and complex issues.

I have specialty training in working with survivors of childhood abuse using a novel treatment called Contextual Trauma Therapy. This treatment aims to help recover not only from the trauma itself, but also the dysfunctional environment in which it occurs. My skillset is uniquely built to address the wide array of issues that can result from PTSD/C-PTSD as I feel you have to specialize in more than just trauma to help work towards resolution.

Treatment Approaches

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is an Evidenced Based Treatment for a wide array of mental health issues. It involves elements such as exposure therapy, building coping skills, challenging thoughts, and fully addressing what leads up to undesirable behaviors. I find that my irreverent style mixes well with CBT, especially for those who did not have positive experiences in the past with CBT

DBT-Informed Therapy

I have extensive experience with Dialectical Behavioral Therapy at my primary position at the Portland DBT Institute, however I do not provide full-fidelity DBT in my private practice. If you are looking for full-fidelity DBT treatment, fill out a referral at pdbti.org.

Exposure and Response Prevention

I am trained and experiencing in providing Exposure and Response Prevention, an evidenced based treatment for OCD.

Contextual Trauma Therapy

Contextual Trauma Therapy was developed to address the unique difficulties that come from repeated exposure to traumatic events and the family environment that is involved. Contextual Therapy is a treatment that aims to treat both the impact of the dysfunctional family environment as well as the trauma itself.

Trauma Processing

At times, trauma processing is necessary in order

to meet your goals and fully find resolution. I am currently trained in Prolonged Exposure and working towards building competence with  Cognitive Processing Therapy.

Mindfulness

I integrate mindfulness based interventions in all of my approaches. Mindfulness-based interventions are a powerful way to change the way we think, increase awareness, and connect to life.

I am trans affirming, kink positive, and work towards constantly increasing my understanding about queer issues. As a straight cis-gender white man, I acknowledge my privilege and feel it is my responsibility to do more for others without the same privilege.

Treatment Limitations

Life Threatening Behavior

I am able to treat individuals experiencing suicidal ideation and self-harm urges/behavior. I am unable to provide services to those who are actively engaging in suicidal behavior and require between session crisis calls. Life threatening behavior would have to be self-regulated enough to be managed at the outpatient level without necessitating between session coaching.

Legal

I may not be able to provide services as part of custody or legal matters

About Me

I have wanted to be a psychologist since I was in high school in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia. I found myself searching for deeper, more meaningful conversations. I wanted to hear people’s stories, how they were discovering themselves and what made them happy. I followed that passion and completed my undergraduate education at George Mason University and my doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Nova Southeastern University in sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Through my training rotations at the Trauma Resolution and Integration Program, VA hospital, and Community Mental Health, I developed an expertise in working with severe emotional dysregulation, dissociative disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and survivors of childhood abuse.

At the Portland DBT Institute, my primary job, I expanded my skillset to working with adolescents, and those who have difficulties with addictions and suicidal ideation. At the Portland DBT Institute, I have served as Program Manager for the Substance Use Disorder Team, Clinical Operations and Infrastructure Manager, Co-leader Trainer, and currently I am serving clients on the Path to Mindful Eating Team. Outside of therapy, my main passion is music - one that’s grown from emo to indie folk. I also love the outdoors, baking, board games, spending time with my wife and kids  as well my two lovely cats.
